The HDMI Forum published the HDMI 2.2 specification this month. Five takeaways for the field: bandwidth doubles to 96Gbps aggregate; a new Ultra96 cable tier is introduced with mandatory certification labels; source-side latency reporting becomes normative; the connector doesn’t change; and 2.2 features are optional for displays.
Should you stockpile?
No. The installed base of 48Gbps FRL gear will remain the sensible default for years. But new installs with a 5+ year horizon should pull certified CAT6A while the walls are open — the marginal cost of the cable is trivial next to a re-pull.
